Two secret Berkeley-based enterprises are the International Exchange Maintenance Company and a Jewish delicatessen named Aladdin’s restaurant, both owned by Onni-cohort Jeremiah Schnee. Both are highly successful businesses run off the sweat of Moonie labor. The proceeds from these businesses go to buying Onni gifts. As Mitch tells it, disciples once bought Onni a $27,000 Mercedes, tied a ribbon around the new car and parked it on the grounds of her $45,000 Berkeley estate. “It’s the wrong color,” Onni scoffed, after inspecting the gift. “Take it back.” Instead, the cultists gave the car to Moon and bought Onni another one — this time in the right color. In other instances, various fund-raising teams have given Onni an 11-carat diamond ring worth $75,000 and a $1,800 mink stole. “She didn’t even say thank you.” said Mitch, referring to the mink. “She already had three.” In an attempt to stifle growing criticism of the church’s slave labor tactics, Jerimiah Schnee now issues salary checks to his restaurant employees. The Moonies endorse the checks, return them to Schnee, who gives them to Onni to be used as her personal spending money. Jeremiah Schnee, who is an assistant to Dr. Mose Durst, the president of the church in the United States, said Mr. Moon was minimally involved in the life of the church, except as the source of its doctrine. 'Spiritual Guidance' He is involved to such a small degree that I am hardly aware of it, Mr. Schnee said yesterday. Reverend Moon is involved in spiritual guidance through speeches and sermons, he said, but only to small groups. If he is jailed, Mr. Schnee said, we will pray harder, we will work harder, we will be more determined that the truth of our life will be understood.Nytimes.com - 1982 05 20 - Moon's followers assert faith is undaunted

Since about forty acres of the Boonville farm consisted of an apple orchard and a vegetable garden, and, since every October we harvested such a super-abundance of fruit and vegetables that much of it would go uneaten and rot in the field, I thought: Why not pack this food in crates and distribute it to people in Oakland? We had given some of our harvest to neighbors, but now Jeremiah Schnee and Russell Allen, two stalwarts of our community, and I tried to figure out how we could systematically distribute it to a larger number of people. Jeremiah suggested we look in the telephone book under churches and social service groups, then make calls to the appropriate directors or ministers to see whether they would be willing to take any food. ABC News reported Thursday the Justice Department will 'soon' start legal proceedings against Moon, whose church claims 30,000 U.S. followers, sometimes called 'Moonies.' Unification Church spokesman Jeremiah Schnee said in New York the group had 'no knowledge whatsoever' of any immigration action. 'We think it is grossly unfair that the first time we learned of this matter is through media news,' he said. 'We do not know what the source of this information is, but if it is indeed the Justice Department, we feel it to be an immoral and improper leak.' The immigration service 'will seek Moon's deportation because of what one source says was 'improperly obtained residency status, ABC News reported.
