Here is given a timeline of the life of Sun Myung Moon. It also includes main events of the history of the Unification Church.
This list serves as a starting point for doing research about the life of Sun Myung Moon. For more information follow the links given in the References section below.
The events are organized in the simplest way possible, from year to year.
Dates are giving according to the solar calendar. Some dates are only available in the lunar calendar. If this is the case, this is mentioned in the text.

1920

  • February 20 - Birth in Sangsa-ri, Deogun-myun, Jeongju-gun, North Pyeongan Province, North Korea. His parents were Moon Kyeungyoo and Kim Kyung-gye, who gave him the name Yongmyung.[1]

1931

  • When he was 11 years old he began to attend the Presbyterian church with many members of his family. In his youth he attended the Confucian primary school.[1]

1935

  • April 17, Easter - Sun Myung Moon says that on Easter Sunday Jesus appeared to him and asked him to continue Jesus' mission of salvation to the world.

1938

  • He entered the Kyeongsong Institute of Commerce and Industry, founded as part of the Japanese educational system in Korea.
  • As a student in Seoul he attended services at several churches. One of these was the Heuksong-dong congregation of the Jesus Church founded by Yong-do Lee. Sun Myung Moon also served as a Sunday School teacher at the Myung Su Dae Church.[1]

1941

  • Started study at the technical high school of Waseda University in Tokyo. He took the name Emoto Ryumei while studying in Tokyo. Among his friends were Christians and communists. He met Korean students who supported the independence movement and the exiled Korean government. He studied the Bible. He disciplined himself to endure physical challenges.[1]

1943

  • He returned to Korea and married Sunkil Choi in a marriage arranged by the couple's parents.(exact date?)
  • He and his bride moved to Heukseok-dong, Seoul and he took up work as an electrical engineer.[1]

1944

  • Arrested on suspicion of being a communist because of his communist friends in Japan. He was released after a few weeks of torture.[1]

1945

  • August 15 - Japan surrendered to the Allies making Korea free of Japanese rule after nearly 40 years. Moon marks this day as the beginning of his public ministry.[1]

1946

  • March 1 - Birth of son Sung Jin
  • June 6 - He leaves his wife and infant son going to Pyongyang, North Korea, teaches there and holds prayer services.
  • His arrest by North Korean authorities and subsequent release. In jail he meets other Christians.

1948

  • Arrested again and sentenced to five years in a communist labor camp, Heungnam labor camp.

1950

  • He is liberated from the labor camp by UN troops that had advanced into North Korea in the Korean War. After that he spends 40 days searching for his disciples.

1951

  • January 28 - He arrives in Pusan, South Korea.

1952

  • May 10 - The first version of Moon's teachings are published, Wolli Wonbon. It was co-written with Hyo Won Eu, one of the first disciples.[2][3]

1953

  • Moon changes his birth name Yong Myung to Sun Myung. Yong means dragon. Myung means bright.[1]

1954

  • March - Moon and his followers move to Seoul.
  • May 1 - Founding of the Unification Church, or The Holy Spirit Association for the Unification of World Christianity.[4]

1955

  • Birth of son Hee Jin.
  • May 11 - October 10 - Excerpts from the Diary of Mr. Hyo Won Eu from 1955.[5]

1957

  • July - Pioneer Unification Church missionaries are sent out to 116 cities and towns throughout Korea.
  • August 15 - Publication of Wolli Haesul (Explanation of the Divine Principle), prepared by Hyo Won Eu.[6]

1958

  • Missionaries are sent to Japan.

1959

  • Missionaries are sent to the United States, and then Europe.
  • Divorce from his wife Choi Sunkil.

1960

  • April 11 - First Blessing ceremony of Moon's marriage to Han Hak Ja.
  • April 16 - Blessing of 3 couples from among his disciples.
  • December 11 - Birth of daughter Ye Jin.

1961

  • May 15 - 33-Couple Blessing, forming 36 couples with the three couples blessed one year earlier.
  • December 3 - Birth of son Hyo Jin.[7]

1962

  • June 4 - 72-Couple Blessing

1963

  • July 24 - 124-Couple Blessing

1964

  • July 27 - Birth of daughter Hye Jin.
  • August 4 - Death of daughter Hye Jin.

1965

  • First visit to the US.[8]
  • July 18 - Birth of daughter In Jin.[9]

1966

  • October 23 - Birth of son Heung Jin.[10]

1967

  • November 23 - Birth of daughter Un Jin.[11]

1968

  • Founding of the International Foundation for Victory Over Communism(IFVOC).
  • Founding of the International Conference on the Unity of Sciences.[12]
  • February 22 - 430-Couple Blessing.

1969

  • 43-Couple Blessing, held in Japan, the US, England. First group of non-Koreans to receive the Blessing.
  • His son Hee Jin dies in a train accident in Seoul.
  • April 10 - Birth of son Hyun Jin.[13]

1970

  • June 14 - Birth of son Kook Jin Moon.[14]
  • October 1 - 777-Couple Blessing.

1972

  • Start of "God Bless America Festivals" (1972-1976).
  • First conference of the International Conference on the Unity of Sciences, founded in 1968.
  • Founding of the Unification Thought Institute. Unification Thought is a philosophy that comprises Rev. Moon's basic teachings.[15]

1973

  • Founding of the Professors World Peace Academy.[16]

1975

  • Teams of missionaries with members from Japan, the United States and Europe are sent to 120 new mission countries.
  • Founding of the International Relief and Friendship Foundation (IRRF), to provide humanitarian relief.[17]
  • Founding of the Sekai Nippo, Japanese daily newspaper.[18]
  • Founding of the Unification Theological Seminary, Barrytown, New York.[19]
  • January 20 - Birth of son Kwon Jin.
  • February 8 - 1800-Couple Blessing.

1976

  • June 15 - Birth of daughter Sun Jin.

1978

  • Establishment of the Isshin Hospital in Japan, integrating Oriental and Western medicine.[20]
  • Founding of the World Media Association, an international forum for media professionals and opinion leaders.
  • May 17 - Birth of son Young Jin.
  • May 21 - 118-Couple Blessing in London.

1979

  • August 6 - Birth of son Hyung Jin.[21]

1980

  • Founding of CAUSA, part of an effort to combat communism. CAUSA worked primarily in Central and South America.[22]

1981

  • Proposal of the International Highway Project. The highway is to link all corners of the world, including a Bering Strait Tunnel and a tunnel to connect Japan with Korea.[23]
  • Founding of Ultimas Noticias, Spanish language daily newspaper published in Uruguay.[24]
  • Start of Paragon House Publishers, a publishing program for ICUS scholars.[25]
  • January 3 - Birth of daughter Yeon Jin.

1982

  • Founding of The Washington Times newspaper[26]
  • Moon is sentenced to 18 months in prison on charges of tax evasion, of which he serves 13 months at the Danbury Correctional facility.
  • June 14 - Birth of daughter Jeung Jin.
  • July 1 - 2075-Couple Blessing in Madison Square Garden, New York.
  • October 14 - 6000-Couple Blessing

1983

  • Founding of the Middle East Times, weekly newspaper in the Middle East.

1984

  • January 3 - Death of son Heung Jin.

1987

  • Founding of the American Constitution Commitee (ACC). Later this becomes the American Freedom Coalition and still later the American Family Coalition (AFC).
  • Summit Council for World Peace. This was the precursor to the Federation for World Peace, a forum for former heads of state and sitting heads of government.[27]

1988

  • October 30 - 6500-Couple Blessing.

1989

  • Founding of the Segye Times, Korean daily newspaper.[28]
  • Founding of Sun Moon University in 1989 in Cheonan, Korea, including the former Sunghwa Theological Seminary.[29]
  • January 12 - 1275-Couple Blessing, with participants from missionary countries.

1990

  • April - First meeting of Moon with Mikhail Gorbachov in Moscow.[30]

1991

  • Inauguration of the Inter-Religious Federation for World Peace.[31]
  • April 10-13 - Inauguration of the Federation for World Peace.[32]
  • December 6 - Moon meets North Korean leader Kim Il Sung[33]

1992

  • Founding of the Women's Federation for World Peace.[34]
  • University of Bridgeport in Connecticut operated in partnership with Professors World Peace Academy.[35]
  • April 10 - 1267-Couple Blessing for previously married couples.
  • August 25 - 30,000-Couple Blessing including participants from former Soviet countries.

1994

  • Founding of Aewon, a volunteer service organization, in Korea.

1995

  • August 25 - 360,000-Couple Blessing, many by satellite, main ceremony in Seoul.

1996

  • Publishing of Exposition of the Divine Principle[36]
  • Founding of Tiempos del Mundo, international Spanish language daily distributed in Latin America.[37]
  • Founding of the World University Federation, for educational exchange using internet technology.[38]
  • August 1 - Founding of the Family Federation for World Peace and Unification[39]

1998

  • Beginning of 400-million Couple Blessing, in stages.

1999

  • October 27 - Death of son Young Jin.

2003

  • Establishment of Cheongshim Hospital, Gapyung, South Korea. At the Cheong Pyeong mountain resort area.

2004

  • Founding of the Mongolian Peoples' Federation for World Peace.[40]

2005

  • September 12 - Founding of the Universal Peace Foundation[41]

2007

  • Inauguration of the World Peace Center in Pyongyang, North Korea.[42]

2008

  • March 17 - Death of son Hyo Jin.

2012

  • September 3 - Reverend Moon died after he was hospitalized with pneumonia a few weeks earlier.
  • September 15 - His Seonghwa (funeral) ceremony

Preparative stuff to include above

International Educational Foundation was founded in 1990, to promote moral education in schools. World Conference on Preservation and Sustainable Development in the Pantanal, first held in 1999, with the goal of seeking ways to develop the Pantanal area without destroying its natural treasures.
