Here is given a timeline of the life of Sun Myung Moon. It also includes main events of the history of the Unification Church.
This list serves as a starting point for doing research about the life of Sun Myung Moon. For more information follow the links given in the References section below.
The events are organized in the simplest way possible, from year to year.
Dates are giving according to the solar calendar. Some dates are only available in the lunar calendar. If this is the case, this is mentioned in the text.

1920s

1920

  • February 20 - Birth in Sangsa-ri, Deogun-myun, Jeongju-gun, North Pyeongan Province, North Korea. His parents were Moon Kyeungyoo and Kim Kyung-gye, who gave him the name Yongmyung.[1]

1930s

1931

  • When he was 11 years old he began to attend the Presbyterian church with many members of his family. In his youth he attended the Confucian primary school.[1]

1935

  • April 17, Easter - Sun Myung Moon says that on Easter Sunday Jesus appeared to him and asked him to continue Jesus' mission of salvation to the world.

1938

  • He entered the Kyeongsong Institute of Commerce and Industry, founded as part of the Japanese educational system in Korea.
  • As a student in Seoul he attended services at several churches. One of these was the Heuksong-dong congregation of the Jesus Church founded by Yong-do Lee. Sun Myung Moon also served as a Sunday School teacher at the Myung Su Dae Church.[1]

1940s

1941

  • Started study at the technical high school of Waseda University in Tokyo. He took the name Emoto Ryumei while studying in Tokyo. Among his friends were Christians and communists. He met Korean students who supported the independence movement and the exiled Korean government. He studied the Bible. He disciplined himself to endure physical challenges.[1]

1943

  • He returned to Korea and married Sunkil Choi in a marriage arranged by the couple's parents.(exact date?)
  • He and his bride moved to Heukseok-dong, Seoul and he took up work as an electrical engineer.[1]

1944

  • Arrested on suspicion of being a communist because of his communist friends in Japan. He was released after a few weeks of torture.[1]

1945

  • August 15 - Japan surrendered to the Allies making Korea free of Japanese rule after nearly 40 years. Moon marks this day as the beginning of his public ministry.[1]

1946

  • March 1 - Birth of son Sung Jin
  • June 6 - He leaves his wife and infant son going to Pyongyang, North Korea, teaches there and holds prayer services.
  • His arrest by North Korean authorities and subsequent release. In jail he meets other Christians.

1948

  • Arrested again and sentenced to five years in a communist labor camp, Heungnam labor camp.

1950s

1950

  • He is liberated from the labor camp by UN troops that had advanced into North Korea in the Korean War. After that he spends 40 days searching for his disciples.

1951

  • January 28 - He arrives in Pusan, South Korea.

1952

  • May 10 - The first version of Moon's teachings are published, Wolli Wonbon. It was co-written with Hyo Won Eu, one of the first disciples.[2][3]

1953

  • Moon changes his birth name Yong Myung to Sun Myung. Yong means dragon. Myung means bright.[1]

1954

  • March - Moon and his followers move to Seoul.
  • May 1 - Founding of the Unification Church, or The Holy Spirit Association for the Unification of World Christianity.[4]

1955

  • Birth of son Hee Jin.
  • May 11 - October 10 - Excerpts from the Diary of Mr. Hyo Won Eu from 1955.[5]

1957

  • July - Pioneer Unification Church missionaries are sent out to 116 cities and towns throughout Korea.
  • August 15 - Publication of Wolli Haesul (Explanation of the Divine Principle), prepared by Hyo Won Eu.[6]

1958

  • Missionaries are sent to Japan.

1959

  • Missionaries are sent to the United States, and then Europe.
  • Divorce from his wife Choi Sunkil.

  • 43-Couple Blessing, held in Japan, the US, England. First group of non-Koreans to receive the Blessing.
  • His son Hee Jin dies in a train accident in Seoul.
  • April 10 - Birth of son Hyun Jin.[13]

  • First conference of the International Conference on the Unity of Sciences, founded in 1968.
  • Founding of the Unification Thought Institute. Unification Thought is a philosophy that comprises Rev. Moon's basic teachings.[15]

  • Moon is sentenced to 18 months in prison on charges of tax evasion, of which he serves 13 months at the Danbury Correctional facility.

  • Founding of the Middle East Times, weekly newspaper in the Middle East.

  • Founding of the American Constitution Commitee (ACC). Later this becomes the American Freedom Coalition and still later the American Family Coalition (AFC).
  • Summit Council for World Peace. This was the precursor to the Federation for World Peace, a forum for former heads of state and sitting heads of government.[27]

  • October 30 - 6500-Couple Blessing.

1989

  • Founding of the Segye Times, Korean daily newspaper.[28]
  • Founding of Sun Moon University in 1989 in Cheonan, Korea, including the former Sunghwa Theological Seminary.[29]

International Educational Foundation was founded in 1990, to promote moral education in schools. World Conference on Preservation and Sustainable Development in the Pantanal, first held in 1999, with the goal of seeking ways to develop the Pantanal area without destroying its natural treasures.
